Captain of the Stars was developed for a class at RIT during the Spring 2016 semester. It is designed with the intent of making a 4X board game experience within a limited playtime of two hours.
Players earn victory points by building settlements and establishing trade routes, but can also earn bounty points by shooting opponents. However, a player who accumulates too many bounty points risk the non-player Federation attacking them. This forces players to spend time with pacifist elements, while still letting attacks and sabotage occur intermittently throughout the game.
An event system helps make each round feel unique, and players can earn money to upgrade their ships engines, shields, weapons, or even crew.
